International MaxxForce 13
The engine from Navistar's decision to meet the 2010 nitrogen oxide standard with exhaust gas recirculation alone rather than adopt selective catalytic reduction, as every competitor did. It did not work.

In the exhaust
Massive EGR, no SCR
The diesel particulate filter arrives, and with it regeneration: the truck periodically burns off the soot it has caught. Regens cost fuel and time, and a filter that will not regen is a truck that will not move.
Known issues
EGR coolers, valves, turbochargers and head gaskets, at rates that produced years of litigation and a class action settlement, and that pushed Navistar into adopting SCR after all.
Verdict
The clearest cautionary tale in modern truck buying. Used prices reflect it. If you are offered one cheap, the price is the warning rather than the bargain.
