What it does to fuel
Neutral. Fuel comes from what the driver does with it, which is exactly the variability automated boxes were brought in to remove.
What this type is
A driver, a clutch and a stick. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to fix, lighter, and increasingly hard to sell: the used market for manuals has thinned as fleets standardised on automated boxes and as fewer drivers can shift one.
Known issues
Clutch brake and clutch wear, and synchroniser-free shifting that punishes a driver who never learned to float. The gearbox itself is close to indestructible.
Verdict
Cheap to buy and cheap to fix, and it will cost you on resale because the pool of drivers who want one keeps shrinking.
