Mack MP8
Shares its architecture with the Volvo D13, Mack and Volvo being the same parent, with Mack calibration and the mDRIVE automated transmission. Strong in vocational and regional work.
Output
415-505 hp
1460-1860 lb-ft peak torque
Fuel per mile
$0.547
at 7.4 mpg and $4.049 a gallon
Fuel a year
$65,659
over 120,000 miles
In-frame overhaul
$21k-$30k
rough, and shop rates move it
In the exhaust
DPF and SCR
The first greenhouse gas phase targets the whole vehicle rather than the engine, so this era is as much about aerodynamics, tyres and axle ratios as combustion. Downspeeding becomes standard: tall gears, low cruise revs.
Known issues
The same family of EGR and aftertreatment items as the D13, which is unsurprising given the shared architecture.
Verdict
If the Volvo D13 suits the work, so does this, and Mack's dealer network leans more vocational, which is worth something depending on what you haul.
